In this nativity the birth of Jesus is set in an African palm house. Carved by Francis Agbete from kapok or thorn wood, this nativity depicts the Holy Family in traditional Ghanian attire. This set includes the Holy Family, a shepherd with two goats, an angel, and three magi with gifts accompanied by a messenger.
The standing figures measure 2.75 inches tall. The stable measures 9.5 inches wide by 6 inches tall.
Francis Agbete was born December 28, 1976 in a family of traditional wood carvers in a suburb of Accra, the capital of Ghana. He learned the trade from his father whom he assisted in his workshop. While still in school he started his own workshop together with his sister and a cousin. Today they operate a workshop where his father’s work is exhibited as well.
